“Lectio Continua” by Fr. Cassian Folsom, OSB

Fr. Cassian, drawing upon the St. Paul’s admonition to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thess 5:17) and St. Benedict’s call in his Rule for monks to devote several hours every day to lectio divina, recommends a classic monastic form of praying with Scripture known as

“Lectio Continua”

Latin for “continuous reading”, you simply:

  1. Read throughout a book in the Bible in a continuous manner.
  2. Stop when you come across a verse that “strikes your fancy.”
  3. Memorize that verse. Write in down. Repeat it often. Ponder. Reflect.
  4. Then turn it into a prayer. Saying this prayer verbally helps (our thoughts can often slip away). Or writing it down in a journal.
  5. Then, since prayer is a dialogue, wait for God to respond in contemplatio.
